This was by far the best food we have had in New Bern since we’ve been living here the last couple of years. We came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. The wait before we were seated was about 30 minutes, but absolutely worth it.
Service was good. Restaurant is Veteran/armed forces themed based on the founder of the restaurant and his service. One of the TVs in the bar area was rotating cute animal videos (the others were on sports, of course). It was actually refreshing to be in a bar and have something cute or funny on one of the TVs.
We were seated at a high top table in the bar area and the door to the restaurant kept blowing very cold wind in so we were freezing at our table which is really the only reason for 4 stars for atmosphere.
I highly recommend Poppy’s for your downtown New Bern dining!

In the mood for a burger, my wife and I went to Poppy's Bites and Barrels. It was about a 15-20 minute wait so we had a beer at the bar. After looking over the menu, our waiter Cody took our order. Our appetizer arrived quickly but due to an issue in the kitchen, our dinner took considerably longer to arrive. He apologized profusely and offered a dessert on him to show his regrets on the slow arrival of dinner. That was the only downside to the dinner this evening, otherwise the food was very good. I had the Napalm Burger and my wife had fish tacos. Both were very satisfying and filling.
The bar is very well stocked and offer some very exceptional bourbons.

We have been here a couple of times, and they never disappoint. The service is always great, food is delicious, and everybody is genuinely kind, helpful, and sweet. Our server, Sam, did a great job taking care of us yesterday. We left very happy and we will be back for sure. The smiley face on my burger was a super cute touch, something I would do at home. This shows that the chef loves what he/she is doing. We had the same bartender which shows the employees happy and they love what they are doing. Overall, great establishment.

Went for lunch with my husband and toddler.. ordered an appetizer and 2 entrees plus kids food. The appetizer took 35 + minutes to come out. We got the loaded pretzel and it was a good portion and food was pretty good… VERY greasy. $23 for greasy fried probably frozen food is a little steep in my opinion but this was the only thing we ordered I wasn’t mad about. Once we received our entrees fish and chips and the beast burger we were so disappointed we asked for the check and boxes. The $22 burger was barely bigger than my child’s cheeseburger (which was extremely burnt) the fish and chips was thinly breaded not fried fish. Just overall poor quality and not worth the $96. The waitress was nice but did not once even acknowledge how long we waited on our food. We will most likely not be returning.

Literally, we had one of the best food service professionals in the business. Incredible! And the food was just as great. My spouse had a chicken cheese steak with sweet potato fries, which had the most tender bits of seasoned chicken (I sampled); and I had the white cheddar mac and cheese with three pieces of bone-in pork spare rib (the sauce was fresh and unique with a taste combination of honey and citrus orange). I usually don't order macaroni and cheese at restaurants, but our super server convinced me with her review of the specials (extra server points here +++). Above all, she asked us did we want to know the specials of the day, 🤌. And yes, the atmosphere was top notch. We ate our food outside, in-front of Poppy's restaurant, and the passerbyers--they helped to make the experience even better. Outside is where you get to enjoy your food and meet some of the most hospitable locals. Thank you Poppy and thank you New Bern.
